S.Koretskaya’s studio in Vilnius. 2023

Sandra Koretskaya, an independent artist based in Vilnius, Lithuania. Her practice revolves around trauma and revival, routed in her personal experience. Born in 1984 (Taganrog, USSR), she embarked on her artistic journey during a time of significant societal upheaval, as the Soviet era collapsed and gave way to a market-driven world.
At the age of 16, in 1998, Sandra Koretskaya began her artistic journey at Rostov Grekov Art School in the Graphic Design department. Upon her graduation, she worked for a year as a graphic designer, specializing on digital drawing and collage. In 2004 she began her university degree at Kharkiv Academy of Design and Arts and in 2009 graduated with BA in Fine Arts. ( Kharkiv, Ukraine). Due to some restrictions based on her nationality, she could not follow the Masters Degree at the same institution and was forced to leave for Technological Institute of Southern Federal University of Taganrog ( Russia). After her graduation with a Specialist Degree ( equal to MA), she immersed herself into an academic world, writing monographs and manuals, and teaching Graphic Desing and realistic drawing at her Alma Mater.
In 2017, Koretskaya went through a severe trauma that subsequently affected her professional life. A catastrophic illness took the life of her mother, leaving a bleeding wound and the ache of endless loss. She quit her teaching job at the university and found her refuge in artistic practice. From then on, shards, fractions, pain and suffer became central to her paintings. Despite her productivity, the works did not resonate with the local cultural community, which favored romantic motives, unburdened by the complexity of human experience.
It became morally too challenging to live in a small provincial town, where everything and everyone reminded her of loss; She moved to Moscow with a hope to dissolve in the big city and to immerse into the metropolitan artistic community.
